MEDIA RELEASE – March 21, 2022
Liburnija to boost its fleet with new state-of-the-art buses
The Zadar-based company Liburnija d.o.o. has conducted a public tender procedure for the purchase of 21 buses, which will replace part of the obsolete fleet.
The company Autobus d.o.o. from Zagreb submitted the best tender for the purchase of 12 intercity high-floor buses 12 meters in length and one intercity high-floor bus with a lifting ramp for the disabled of the Iveco brand, Crossway line. They are manufactured according to the EURO VI standard with low CO2 emissions, are adapted for people with disabilities, and they have been delivered and will soon be operating.
In the completed procedure, the best tender for the purchase of six low-floor Mercedes-Benz Conecto city buses, 12 meters long, and two interurban high-floor Mercedes Intouro buses, 15 meters long, was submitted by Jolly auto line d.o.o., which will Liburnia deliver no later than one year from the signing of the contract. All buses are manufactured according to the EURO VI standard with low CO2 emissions and are adapted for people with disabilities.
There are 88 buses in the Liburnia fleet, 30 of which are older than 15 years, powered by EURO II, EURO III and EURO IV engines. In addition to being insufficiently adapted to the needs of passengers and making it difficult for vulnerable groups (disabled, children, the elderly, etc.) to access, they have covered over 25.5 million kilometers. After the delivery of the new ones, the oldest buses from the fleet will be scrapped, so the average age of vehicles in daily use will be below 5 years.
The new buses manufactured according to the EURO VI standard will have a positive environmental impact by reducing emissions by approx. 359 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. They are also adapted for people with disabilities according to the latest standards.
The procurement of new buses was financed under the Second Call for Co-financing the Procurement of buses for the provision of public transport services. The grant agreement was signed on 14 May 2021 by Liburnija d.o.o., the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure and the Central Agency for Financing and Contracting of EU Programs and Projects (CFCA). The project for the procurement of 21 new buses is worth a total of HRK 49,450,000.00, of which HRK 33,500,000.00 are grants from the EU’s Cohesion Fund.
The general objective of the project is to improve the quality of public transport services for citizens in the city of Zadar and suburban local government units, and ensure its sustainability. The specific objectives of the project are to increase the comfort and availability of public transport services, reduce the harmful impact on the environment and CO2 emissions, increase the safety of drivers and passengers in public transport, and lower vehicle maintenance costs.
Modernizing the vehicle fleet will contribute to ensuring an appropriate level of comfort, safety and frequency of transport for citizens, which would encourage them to reduce the use of personal vehicles. The higher reliability of new vehicles and fewer breakdowns will contribute to savings in passenger travel time due to avoided delays. The purchased buses will operate in the administrative area of the co-owners of the Company who are signatories to the Framework Agreement on Services of Public Interest and Public Transport Provision.
